Deviant1 goes through the looking glass
02.01.05 (7:36 am)   [edit]

Can a tiger change his stripes? This is something that I have been thinking on for quite awhile. Change to me is somewhat like giving birth. It can be a hellish thing to have to go through but the result can make it all worth it.

Life for me has been more or less on autopilot for the last couple of years or so. Nothing earth shattering in the way of changes have occurred. This is an odd place to be for someone like me. I am very good with crisis management and clawing my way up from chaos to order. In fact, my entire life until lately has been a series of life altering changes. Some I created for myself and before I was able to do that others did it for me. When you find yourself in a crisis situation goals are very clear and one is easily motivated to reach those goals. Chaos, catastrophe and failure are something that I am home with. I usually know exactly what to do and proceed to do it, like a pitbull on cocaine.

Without chaos and drama and it creates I am a bit disorientated and lost. The clarity and focus that drives me under profoundly negative circumstances is gone. As the zoologist Desmond Morris might put it I suffer from the “Stimulus Struggle”.

So what can I do about this? What can I do to get myself one step higher. One more step on Maslow’s pyramid. One step closer to Satori, if your into zen. One step closer to the Beatific, if you be Christian. Reaching your potential, if you like new age crap. Ultimately, its all the same thing.

Well, not being a person with any common sense at all I have decided go radically alter everything all at once. I have a birthday in a few weeks and I am giving myself until then to prepare an action plan.

Firstly, start meditating on a daily basis again a few minutes a day at first.

Secondly, I will stop smoking cold turkey, with the Aid of the patch. I figure in the short term this will cause me to ingest mass amounts of food to compensate. That’s fine, I need to do that (just without my usual far of fast food) for step 2. I will need to plan for a high energy diet.

Next : Start working out again, nothing major at first. General free weight program that will lead to a 5 day split in a few months. Maybe some hockey or ultimate frisbee. After I am in generally better condition maybe I’ll get into Martial Arts again, who knows?

Finally, once the mind and body are working a bit better I will take on coding. Specifically C#. This will help me career wise as coding is my weak point, plus for project management and security aspects of IT. A step on my way to and end career goal.

A lot to do, especially all at once, but like I said without any major challenges I just … stagnate.

What do you think? All out fanatsy on the level of "Alice in Wonderland"? Possible to do? Anyone got any advice for any of these steps?

Hey cmy brain is too spent right now to throw in any input on your plans and golas for closing in on the tao (thought of another namesake for it- i guess im not all that spent) But just felt like throwing in that absofuckinlutely feel you on the whpole "working towards goals under crisis-typ situation"... Its like the normal day to day mundane rat race uneventful yet on the surface pleasant day to day living leaves me numb-- just kinda rambling through the various manmade sytems out there trying to fit in the best i can.... but then suddenly tear away that structuire that others seem to to depnd or at least take comfort in... strip it away or suddenly smashit it back into chaos and bang! suddenly the chaos swirling in my head suddenly transforms from a sbit of of handicap of sorts and comes to life.... then i can take that alleged chaos in my head and match it up in all sorts of ways with the chaos out in the now fresstyled world and instead of wearing blinders im wearing exray vision goggles that let me see all soretts of different ways of making sense of whats there and reshaping it into anythinbg...the creative possibilities becomes lmitless and the ability to zoom in on specific targets and goals is clear as day... creation ande problem solving makes me feel right at home...
anyhow... thats all-- not much help here. just felt like throwing in my take on how I connected with what you described.
Oh and ciogarettes. I love them! i never wanna quit! lol... okay maybe someday... a little...

Kudos to yourself for making a list of goals. You might want to set up a support system and extra strategies for stopping smoking. (Never smoked myself) I think the American Lung Association has some tips on quitting - Totally support you in doing it though!

What is essential in goal-setting is making sure they are realistic, attainable and you have a plan of action. You might want to be more specific on the workout one - is your goal to lose weight, tone more, or just feel better physically? You need to think thru that one a little more and come up with some concrete action plan.

And the meditation - have you done it before? What is the goal there? How long will you meditate daily? What do you expect to gain from it?

Ok, stepping off my coaching soapbox.

you can do it!! as far as the smoking thing, get some sugar free lollipops. alot of it has to do with oral fixation. the lollipop's will help with the hand mouth thing and the need to occupy your mouth. and i can email you some pics that might help. and do tae bo!!! that stuff is killer

the overall goal is to be more able to make my life extraordinary.

I am hoping that these steps will create a sort of poistive viscious cycle. Quitting smoking will definately increase my appetite and make me need to do things other than smoke. Hopefully that positively affects my working out in those two ways.

Working out will help my body work better and in turn will help me focus my mind better as well. Hopefully, I will have attained a stlightly better working "machine", as a whole.

The meditation will hopefully aid me to focus while trying to change the old habits and build new ones at the same time.

Once I have achieved some semblance of maind/body balance I can really focus on more comples mind and body enhancement: C# coding, not for the feint of heart. Jui-Jutsu not for the feint of heart.

When this has been achieved then I can take on things even bigger.

Of course, there is also all kinds of ancillary benefits to each of these things, but thats the gist.

Maslow's pyramid or Manilow's pyramid? That's it! The answer is Barry Manilow!

That is definitely a lot to tackle at one time, but by doing it all at once, you are able keep from focusing on one thing, and obsessing about it until you talk yourself out of doing it. I believe it is all possible if it something you want to do. As far as advice, I'll have to steal from Nike, and say:

"JUST DO IT!"

Wow! How can you beat that offer from Almsthvn? If that isn't an incentive to quit smoking! (just kidding)

Anyway I think that if you put your mind to it you can do anything. If there is a will there is a way.

Just remember as Rob Schneider says " YOU CAN DO IT!!!"

Not only possible, but probable. But your goals have to be reasonable. For instance, my gyn goal was to "just get in" 5 days a week. Now I have, for 4.5 weeks, and my strength and endurance have improved exponentially. My financial goal was to spend no more than the budgeted amount. So even though I have a long list of the things I didn't buy, I came in pretty close to goal, which means I am paying off my debt at $1000 a mo, while still putting money in 401k and college accounts. Before this month I wasn't paying attention, and spent that extra $1000.
BTW, in the last year, my hubby stopped drinking (serious alcohol problems for 7 years) stopped smoking (cold turkey, no patch) and in the last 5 weeks has lost 19 lbs. If he can do that, well anyone can. There was a time about 3.5 years ago when I had no hope. Anyway, that's my take.....so - we "friends" now?? :oD

Isn't Barry Manilow the answer to everything? Or is that the Copa Cabana?

um, yeah, that was "gym" goal, not "gyn" goal. Wow - all sorts of interesting possibilities, there!

Indeed, goals are important! Hahaha!

In all seriousness, thanks for the encouragement. I am thinking of going without the patch, I have some left over from when I tried to quit last year.

We will see I still have a little over 3 weeks to get all my duck's in a row.

yes it's possible. but you're gonna have to be a HIGHLY motivated person. and if you're not innately that motivated, you've got to seek motivation wherever you can get it. but it IS possible.

I can certainly relate to the chaotic state of being, live it everyday. But I also seem to perform much better with added pressure. The more goals I seem to set for myself the better end results I seem to have. Hope the same is true for you. The motivation being "making your life extraordinary" is a fantastic outlook, I think. Best of luck in everything.

Thats just the thing, I don't have the chaos that normally motivates me to do achieve. So instead of responding to negative stress, I plan to proactively create it for myself. Does that make any sense? Becuase I am really stubborn I hope that it will give me the motivation that I require.

i see so it looks like you like having a LOT of stuff going on at once. but like you said, the negative stress is no good... so i'm sure you can find ways to fill your life up with a LOT of stuff that gives you joyfeelings, instead, u know? that way you still have the hectic balancing act, but you're balancing good stuff, instead.
